OPG
What is an OPG ?
An OPG is a rotational panoramic plain film dental xray that allows the dentist to view the upper and lower jaws. It is a 2-dimensional representation of these.
How do I prepare for my OPG ?
OPG and Cone Beam examinations can be performed without prior preparation on behalf of the patient. The radiographer may ask you to remove metal objects such as necklaces and earrings as they interfere with the quality of the image.
What happens during my OPG?
During an OPG/Cone Beam examination, the rotating arm of the machine will rotate around your head, and the image is captured on film or a sensor.
Are there any after-effects from an OPG ?
No. You won’t feel any different after these tests.
How long does an OPG ?
An OPG image can be generated in about 5 minutes, while a Cone Beam exam can be done in about 15 minutes.
What are the risks of an OPG ?
The only risk associated with these is the very small dose of radiation from the xray unit. Lead shielding is always provided to the patient to minimise the effect of the radiation.
What are the benefits of an OPG ?
An OPG is a simple test that provides the referring practitioner with an overall view of your jaws, teeth, and joints. It is an excellent tool for diagnosing diseases of teeth and bone, and is generally done for most patients that require surgical, periodontal, or dental treatment.
Cone Beam exams are more detailed studies of the jaws, teeth, and joints that are required for surgical procedures, implants, orthodontic treatment, or diagnosing pathology.
Who does the OPG ?
Qscan employs an Oral Pathologist with extensive experience in dental pathology and imaging to report all OPGs and Cone Beam studies. An Oral Pathologist is a dental specialist who deals with diseases of the jaws and teeth.
What are the costs of an OPG?
These are bulk billed and rebated on Medicare. There is no out of pocket expense to the patient or practitioner.
Where is an OPG ?
Multiple Qscan locations offer OPG examinations. Cone Beam examinations are available in Brisbane CBD, Toowong, and Greenslopes.
When can I expect the results of my OPG?
Typically we will provide the report of these exams directly to your referring practitioner within 3-5 working days. Urgent cases are reported on the same day.
